As I approached the statue the first time I felt as if time stopped as if I were in the holiest place on earth. Emma Lazarus's poem rang in my ears, announcing to all mankind that all the poor of the earth would find a new home there.

'Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!'

Emma Lazarus, 1883.
